Rockabilly and Duff's Garage!

Last night I got a text from a friend of mine about an event at Duff's Garage here in Portland. Seems there's a six year old and his dad and brother who are going to be there tonight playing. The six year old sings and the dad and brother play.

I've been happily re-creating or drawing inspiration from vintage, circa 1930's to 1950's, hairstyles for several months now and have been thoroughly enamored with the culture and style of the vintage subset. It's been a lot of fun and growth to discover styles and fashions which fit and actually look good on me! Being not a toothpick, but rather hour-glass-like, the styles suit me way better than any 'super-holy-crap-butt-crack low rise' jeans ever will. Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to get an affordable pair of jeans that isn't extra low rise, or lacking in hips if it's not?? Seriously. I can't be the only one this shape.

Anyway, the invitation found me lacking in Winter/Spring appropriate vintage/vintage inspired clothing, so I'll be scrambling to find something vaguely reminiscent of the '50s that I can wear there tonight. One of my favorite sites to drool over, though is Baby Girl Boutique . They have some rather cute things, like this dress and this one. They are actually based in Portland, too, which is really neat - to me anyway! They were even nice enough to allow me to skip shipping and pick up a dress out from their location (I contacted them by email to set up a time).

Here's hoping I find something for tonight!

Tasty Biscuits and Bleeding Hearts

Really, what morning is complete without homemade biscuits and jam? I would have taken pictures, but I ate them too fast and scurried off to work.

Instead, here is a picture of my beloved Bleeding Heart. I bought this as barely more than a couple of leaves two years ago. It did nearly nothing the first year and I was sure I'd killed it until it exploded into what you see here last year. Actually, truth be told, this is about three quarters of the size it ended up being last year. This past year, though, we had some rather cold weather. For here anyway. 17 degrees Fahrenheit! For several days, even! These guys aren't supposed to be terribly cold tolerant. My mom told me about how my great grandmother would carefully cover hers with a jar every winter in Colorado so that it would come back the next year. I didn't manage to take such precautions though, I just didn't expect it to get that cold over here.
Looking along the sides of roads I see that I'm not alone though, lots of people seem to have lost branches or entire trees and shrubs to this season's quick and sharp cold snap. On the bright side, though, I'll get to pick out new plants for all the ones that didn't make it! New plants are one of my great joys in life. I have a very hard time not buying half the nursery every time I go, lol! To make matters worse, there's one within walking distance of my house! Though, walking does seem to keep my purchases smaller than they would be if I had a whole car to load up instead of just my arms.

So, here's hoping my little Bleeding Heart is ok!

So it begins...

Or, continues rather. In an effort to make my life easier I've elected not to do catch-up work with this blog, but to go forth and blog from today forward!

Weighing heavily on my mind of late is the impending spring planting season. Anticipation and anxiety are playing racquetball in my head over this subject. Last year's garden only went so-so, but I have so many exciting plans for it this year! The anxiety part comes in when I think of how close it is to time to start planting things here, lol!

Last year my lovely boyfriend built me this tomato trellis. It was more than I had specified, but he's pretty good at doing things to the nth degree, gotta love him for that! My garden construction projects for this year, or wish list rather, are for a potato growing contraption and a three sectioned compost bin. We'll see how much I actually get done though, I tend to get overly ambitious in nearly everything. One of my goals for this year is to start getting that under control!
